Adding Depth to Your Shots by Deliberately Adding an Obstacle in the Frame

When taking candid shots, try and include some obstacle in front of your main subject.

This adds depth to your shot.

Like in the shot below, you can see that the photographer has deliberately included the first two people inside the frame even though the subject is the woman behind.

Doing so gives depth because that’s how our eye works. We never see only one thing. While only one thing may be in focus, we are also simultaneously seeing other things that seem out of focus for us.

Since we replicate what happens in real life, the viewer feels like the shot is more 3D in nature.
